On the 31st of December 2011, we bid farewell to 2011 and welcomed 2012 with 24 Hour Metta and launched Metta Round The World

The last day of 2011 began bright and early at SJK (C) Sungai Way

24 Hour Metta volunteers young and old were busy with various preparatory activities, from lining up water bottles for the water offering…

…to arranging candles for the offering of light

As 9am approached, Metta Participants began to gather in the hall…

…leaving their shoes in neat rows outside

The event began with an opening puja, lead by members of the Sangha…

…followed by an opening speech by Bhante Mahinda to officially launch 24 Hour Metta

Members of the Sangha and event sponsors were invited to perform the offering of light

Sponsors of 24 Hour Metta were also presented with tokens of appreciation by Bhante Mahinda

Without further ado, 24 hours of metta chanting commenced, lead in turn by Sangha representatives of the three major Buddhist traditions

Close to noon, members of the Sangha were invited to partake a lunch dana…

…while the chanting was carried on, lead by Buddhist groups from all over Malaysia

Each group led hourly sessions of  non-stop relay chanting of the Karaniya Metta Sutta and recitation of mantras. Over 30 organisations lead chanting sessions onsite, and 7 offsite with the furthest joining in from Australia!

At twilight, volunteers lit up the candles for the offering of light

As midnight approached, the hall began to fill up with people and voices chanting

Bhante Mahinda lead the participants in Metta meditation…

…as well as in the offering of lights

As this light symbolizes the light of Truth that dispels the darkness of ignorance, may the light of wisdom and compassion, too, be kindled in ourselves

(To be continued…)

Special thanks to photographers who contributed these beautiful photos!
